Eduard Eberhard von Gemmingen (born May 26, 1829 in Gemmingen , † January 16, 1871 in Dijon ) was an officer in Baden , most recently a major .

Life

origin

He was a son of Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm von Gemmingen (1794-1858) and Emma Sebastiane Karoline von Gemmingen-Bonfeld (1804-1865). Like his older brothers Otto and Wilhelm Dietrich , he was intended for a military career.

Military career

Gemmingen joined the body infantry regiment of the Baden Army as a volunteer on April 1, 1845 . There he was promoted to lieutenant on April 14, 1848 , and in the same year was involved in battles against the revolutionary militia . In March 1850 he was transferred to the 9th Infantry Battalion and in mid-June to the 6th Infantry Battalion. Promoted to first lieutenant on August 17, 1855 , he served in the 4th Fusilier Battalion from May 27 to December 6, 1859. This was followed by his transfer to the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Prince of Prussia" . Here Gemmingen rose to captain and company commander on December 9, 1863 and took part in the war against Prussia in 1866 .

On March 10, 1868, he was transferred back to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment, which he had already belonged to at the beginning of his military career. Promoted to major at the end of the year , Gemmingen was appointed commander of the 1st battalion in 1870. He took part in the siege of Strasbourg in 1870 during the war against France and fought at Étival , Brouvilliers , Bruyères , Auxon-Desus , Dijon and the Battle of Nuits . There Gemmingen suffered a shoulder injury on December 18, 1870, of which he died on January 16, 1871 in Dijon.

He was buried on February 19, 1871 in Gemmingen.
