Wilhelm Dietrich Freiherr von Gemmingen (born April 17, 1827 in Gemmingen , † October 18, 1903 in Karlsruhe ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Wilhelm Dietrich was a son of Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm von Gemmingen (1794-1858) and his wife Emma Sebastiane Karoline, born von Gemmingen-Bonfeld (1804-1865). His father was a chamberlain of Baden and a chief forestry officer.

Military career

After attending the high school in Karlsruhe, he graduated from the war school and the artillery school for officers. On October 1, 1842, he joined the artillery brigade of the Baden Army as an avant-garde . In 1846 he became a lieutenant and took part in the suppression of the Baden Revolution in 1848/49 . In 1852 Gemmingen rose to lieutenant and became brigadjutant the following year. In mid-May 1859, he was promoted to captain and appointed battery boss . In 1866 he took part in the war against Prussia as leader of the mounted battery , but without getting into battle. In 1867 he came as a Major for Dragoon Regiment "Prince Charles" . Associated with this was his use as an orderly officer of the Grand Duke of Baden. On November 22, 1868, Gemmingen was transferred to the General Staff and promoted to lieutenant colonel in May 1869 . In July 1869 he was appointed regimental commander. In this position he took part in the sieges of Strasbourg and Belfort and the battle of Wörth during the war against France .

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit , Gemmingen was accepted into the Prussian Army on July 15, 1871 after the Peace of Frankfurt . In 1873 he was promoted to colonel . In 1876 he switched to the 21st Cavalry Brigade in Frankfurt am Main , where he became major general in 1878 . In 1883 he moved to Düsseldorf as Lieutenant General , where he commanded the 14th Division . In 1886 he returned to Frankfurt in the same position and commanded the 21st Division . On July 12, 1888 Gemmingen was with the character as a cavalry general and board for disposition made. He took his retirement home in Karlsruhe.

In 1858 he was one of the founders of the racecourse in Iffezheim . From 1871 to 1875 and from 1889 to 1899 Wilhelm von Gemmingen was one of the representatives of the manorial nobility below the Murg in the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly .
