history

The parish of Altenmünster has existed since the 9th century. The church tower with a pointed roof later added in the style of Julius Echter is the oldest part of the church, dating from the 13th century. The nave was built in 1672 . The canonized martyr Liborius Wagner worked in the parish from 1626 to 1631 . The parish was divided into denominations: the main town of Altenmünster was predominantly Protestant, while the Sulzdorf branch was predominantly Catholic. A native of strict Lutheran family and at the Jesuit converted, he was in 1625 in Würzburg for priests ordained. Liborius Wagner tried to balance the two denominations. In 1631 Swedish soldiers brought him to Mainberg Castle . Because of his refusal to renounce the Catholic faith, he was tortured to death and his body thrown into the Main . He is buried in the parish church of Heidenfeld . A reliquary of his was brought into the church on the occasion of the beatification . At the time he was active, the parish church is said to have been in poor condition.

Description and equipment

The church tower stands as a choir tower in the east. The choir room in the basement has a ribbed vault . The nave with three window axes has a flat roof. The windows of the church are ogival . The baptismal font and sacrament house in the church date from the construction period. The church was later given a neo-Gothic interior. In 1958, it was removed from the church at the instigation of the Würzburg cathedral builder Hans Skull . Parts of it returned to the church on new side altars in the late 1980s. The church also contains a bronze picture above the baptismal font depicting Liborius Wagner. A wooden cross with a bronze body is placed above the altar . The church windows were designed on the occasion of the beatification of Liborius Wagner.
