Maria Elisabeth Stapp

Maria Elisabeth Stapp (born February 20, 1908 in Riedlingen , † April 26, 1995 in Memmingen ) was a German sculptor .

Maria Elisabeth Stapp grew up in the first years of her life in Riedlingen in Upper Swabia . Her father was a businessman and inventor . In 1914 the family moved to Munich . After graduating from the Gymnasium am Anger in Munich, she completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Josef Henselmann, among others . She was a co-founder of the Benedictine lay community Venio in Munich - Schwabing. In 1927 she became a Benedictine oblate in Beuron under the name of Sister Hermana . She supported the monastery of the Benedictine nuns on the island of Hvar in Dalmatia , which she got to know during a spa stay in 1934 , for her entire life . With her profound knowledge, she became the master of Gregorian chant for the Benedictine nuns, who were oppressed by the political situation in the former Yugoslavia . She met the theologian Josef Weiger through her father . She was one of Romano Guardini's close friends .

The focus of her artistic work was the translation of traditional liturgical contents into a modern formal language.

In 1962 she moved to the spacious late baroque rectory of Mooshausen in the Ravensburg district . Until 1988 she lived and worked there in her artist studio. She died in 1995 in the nursing home of the Franciscan Sisters von Reute in Altshausen and was buried in the cemetery of the parish church of St. Johann Baptist in Mooshausen.

Honors

Bishop Georg Moser awarded her the Martinus Medal of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese in 1983 on the occasion of her 75th birthday .
