Maria Lai (born September 27, 1919 in Ulassai ; † April 16, 2013 in Cardedu , Sardinia ) was an Italian object artist , painter and performer .

life and work

Maria Lai took courses at the boarding school in Cagliari in 1932 with Salvatore Cambosu (1895–1962). Established in Rome in 1939, she attended courses from Angelo Prini and Arturo Martini . From 1943 she studied at the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia with Alberto Viani and Marino Mazzacurati . In 1945 she left Venice to return to Sardinia. In Cagliari she worked as a drawing teacher. In 1954 she returned to Rome, met Giuseppe Dessì and changed the way she worked. In 1971 she presented her first major exhibition in the Schneider Gallery in Rome. The curator was Marcello Venturoli. In 1977 she met Mirella Bentivoglio . In 1978 Lai took part in the Venice Biennale . The well-known performance legarsi alla montagna / bind oneself to the mountain comes from 1981 . Maria Lai is known for objects made with a needle and thread. In 2006 the Stazione dell'arte museum opened in the former Ulassai train station. Maria Lai presented the museum about 140 of their most important works as a donation available.

In 2017, her works were shown posthumously at Documenta 14 in Kassel . She was also represented at the Biennale di Venezia 2017 with selected groups of works. The MAXXI - Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome dedicated a major retrospective to her for the hundredth in 2019.
