Maria Magdalena Koller

Maria Magdalena Koller (born September 25, 1957 in Feldbach in Styria; † February 21, 2019 in Vienna ) was an Austrian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Maria Magdalena Koller studied German , history and philosophy at the University of Graz . She did her doctorate in 1985 with the topic “Economic Policy under National Socialism ”. After working as an AHS teacher, she worked for Hugo Portisch's team for five years . Since 1992 she has worked as a screenwriter and film director. Her works include, in particular, documentaries from the fields of history, social politics, culture, religion and nature films. A large number of the works were produced in cooperation with German broadcasters and Arte and have won multiple awards. From 2013 to 2015 she held a professorship for dramaturgy at the Karl Franzens University Graz .

Koller was honored with the Golden Eagle Award 2009 and the Austrian People's Education Award 1999 for the documentation Commando Forced Labor . In 2001 she received the Silver World Medal at the New York Festivals for her ORF documentary "We are not silent" and was nominated for the Prix Europe in Berlin . The ORF documentary is about violence against women during the Balkan War . For the first time women speak publicly about their suffering. The film was shown worldwide. With the docu-drama Mother Teresa - Saints of Darkness , Koller created a poignant portrait and human obituary for a great personality. The film illuminates the life of the world-famous missionary and tells of her inner conflicts and the not always easy love for God. The international co-production Triumph der Tomato depicts the worldwide campaign of conquest of this coveted fruit in a sensual way. For this, Koller received several international awards, including a. the Silver Dolphin at the Corporate Media & TV Awards in Cannes.

Koller lived in Vienna with her husband, the cartoonist Gerald Mayerhofer .
