family

Marie Schmidt was the second youngest of seven daughters of the farmer Heinrich Kühn (1849–1929) and his wife Elisabeth, born Born (1859–1921). She married the plasterer Adolf Theodor Schmidt (1890–1944) on April 23, 1914

Marie Schmidt worked as a housewife in Egelsbach. After the death of her husband in 1943, Marie Schmidt worked in a post office in Frankfurt. In 1945 she moved to Neu-Isenburg to live with her daughter Margot.

Her son Theo fled to the Saar region in 1934 and from 1936 participated in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the International Brigades and fell in 1937 near Tarragona .

politics

Marie Schmidt was active in the proletarian free-thinker movement and joined the KPD. She was elected to the municipal council of Egelsbach. As a speaker for the KPD in Hesse, she appeared very aggressive and was therefore given the name "Rote Marie".

Marie Schmidt was one of the three female members of the Hessian state parliament for the KPD from 1931 to 1932 in the 5th electoral term.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists, she and her husband were briefly arrested in March 1933 and released after a few weeks. After the war she became a member of the KPD and DFD again and then withdrew from political life.
