The ladybird poppy ( Papaver commutatum ), also called dwarf poppy , is a species of the poppy family (Papaveraceae). This species is similar to the corn poppy and gets its name from the striking black dots at the base of its petals . The ladybird poppy is native to northern Turkey , northwestern Iran and the Caucasus ; occasionally it is used as a garden ornament.

External features

The annual , herbaceous plant reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters. The upright or ascending stem , grayish hairy in the lower part, is very thin and often branches near the ground. The pinnate leaves are up to 15 centimeters long, are hairy and have elongated to oval, toothed or entire segments.

At the end of the stalk, the flower bud is nodding and later sitting upright, the large red, radial symmetry , hermaphrodite flower . The two hairy sepals fall off when the flower bud is opened. The four obovate petals each have a black spot at the base, which seldom extends to the edge of the petal. They are very thin and resemble wrinkled paper. The many stamens with the dark stamens and the yellow anthers sit tightly around the ovary . The upper ovary is provided with 5 to 10 furry rays at the top. The flowering period is May to August. The hermaphrodite flowers are pollinated by insects or they pollinate themselves .

The seeds escape from the openings, under the lid of the conical pore capsule , when the plant sways in the wind, so it spreads via anemochory (wind spread).

Occurrence

The ladybird poppy is native to northern Turkey, northwestern Iran, and within the Caucasus in Armenia and Azerbaijan . It grows on gravelly, eroded mountain slopes at altitudes between 800 and 1800 meters.

The decorative varieties are used as an ornamental plant. It is very easy to cultivate in sunny to partially shaded places with well drained, slightly moist soil.

The slightly toxic latex in the capsule contains isocorydin as the main alkaloid . The pharmaceutical industry rarely uses the plant species. It is of no importance for the production of narcotics and especially for the production of opium.
