history

In the 19th century, European settlers established numerous farms and villages in the fertile land along the Red River. In 1887 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway (later Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway ) built a train station in what is now Marietta, which at that time was still in Indian territory . The actual city history began on June 2, 1898, when the place became an independent municipality . The population from then around 550 rose rapidly to 1546 in 1910 and 1977 inhabitants in 1920. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, the population fell to 1505, only after World War II did the population of Marietta rise again to the current level of 2445.

In the early years, the railway was an important factor in the city's economic development. The later built Interstate 35, however, had a rather negative impact on the economic life of Marietta, since the through traffic now passed the city. A particularly severe blow was the closure of two large companies in 2004, the Marietta Bakery and a Siemens Dematic plant with 400 and 64 employees respectively. The most important employer for the citizens of Marietta is now the WinStar Casino of the Chickasaw tribe in neighboring Thackerville .
