Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek the Younger

Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek the Younger (born January 29, 1873 in Amsterdam , Kingdom of the Netherlands ; † May 30, 1944 ibid) was a Dutch animal painter who mainly depicted birds, but also painted landscapes . He was a watercolorist , pastel painter and draftsman . In the literature he is also referred to as Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek II because of the similarity of his name to his great-uncle .

Life

Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek came from the Dutch Koekkoek family of painters . The artist was the eldest of the two sons of the painter Willem Koekkoek and Johanna Hermina , as well as the grandson of the painter Hermanus Koekkoek the elder and great-grandson of the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek . His brother was the painter Hermanus Willem Koekkoek . His father taught him painting. He was active as an artist in Amsterdam from 1888 until his death in 1944.

Koekkoek created watercolors for two series of twelve science school books:

  • "In our country": The Naardermeer , on the meadow , in the ditch and in the pond , freshwater fish , in the North Sea , winter birds , the beach , in the dunes , on the ruins , on the river , on the heath and in the Woods .
  • "Outside our country": The inhabitants of the Carpathians , surrounded by snow and ice , In a German mountain forest , In the region of the Upper Nile , On the edge of the Kalahari , Under the date palms , North American forest inhabitants , In the Brazilian jungle , In the Siberian plain , Borneo , In the Jungle and The Australian Fauna .

Koekkoek later made twelve more watercolors with which the series “In our Land” was reissued. He later worked for 20 years for the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden , for which he illustrated academic pictures.

A propaganda poster with the title “Be brave, be stürmer ” (Dutch Weest dapper, wordt stormer ), illustrated in the Second World War for the “Jugendsturm” ( Dutch Jeugdstorm ), was wrongly attributed to him, as was a poster designed in 1943 for the Nederlands Arbeidsfront with the Title “A healthy youth works for the Netherlands” (Dutch Een gezonde jeugd werkt voor Nederland ). However, this work came from his son, Cornelis Koekkoek .

In 1944 Koekkoek produced a number of postcard designs for the Amsterdam Artis Zoo .
