Mario Tennis is a video game series developed by Camelot and distributed by Nintendo . Tennis games in which Mario appeared, such as tennis, have already been released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the Game Boy . However, these do not belong to the Mario tennis series.

Game mechanics

As the title suggests, it is a tennis computer game in which the popular Nintendo hero Mario, his friends and enemies compete against each other in various game variants. This is not a realistic simulation of tennis, but rather a balanced mix of realism and fun that even inexperienced players can quickly tap into. There are numerous, sometimes quite unusual game modes available. If you achieve success in them, new characters or tennis courts are unlocked.

As in Mario Golf , characters can be transferred between the home console version and the portable version of the game. Between Mario Tennis for Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color , this was done via the Transfer Pak . In this way you could unlock four new characters on the N64.

Similar to Mario Kart , Mario Party , Mario Smash Football , Mario Baseball and Mario Golf , the multiplayer mode is an important component, as up to four players can play against and with one another.

Games

Mario's Tennis (Virtual Boy)

Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy was released in Japan and the US in 1995 , where it was sold in conjunction with the console. Initially, an implementation of a 2-player mode was planned. However, this could never be used, as the planned option of connecting two Virtual Boys was never implemented.

Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64)

Mario Tennis 64 was released on November 3, 2000 for the Nintendo 64 in Europe. The first appearance of the character Waluigi is remarkable , who developed into an adequate opponent of Luigi and Mario in subsequent games. There is also the option of Super Mario Bros. 2 known Birdo selected as the game character.

Mario Tennis (Game Boy Color)

The game was released on February 10, 2001 in Europe for the Game Boy Color and differs significantly from the other parts of the series because it has an RPG-like plot. The player starts out as a young tennis player who has just joined the Mushroom Kingdom's Royal Tennis Academy. The academy's best player is Mario. The aim of the game is to gain enough experience through training sessions and tournaments to win against Mario. By connecting to the Nintendo 64 you can unlock some new figures and equipment for the characters and transfer them between the two games.

Mario Power Tennis (Nintendo GameCube)

Mario Power Tennis was released on February 25, 2005 in Europe for the Nintendo GameCube . In terms of gameplay, it is the successor to Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64). On March 6, 2009, Nintendo released Mario Power Tennis from the "New Play Control!" Series as a new edition of the game for the Wii console.

Mario Power Tennis (Game Boy Advance)

Mario Power Tennis is the adaptation of the NGC version for the Game Boy Advance and was released in Europe on November 18, 2005. In addition to the normal tennis game, similar to its predecessors, it is based on an RPG-like story as a basis. Despite the very similar game structure and the existing hardware basis, it is not possible to transfer characters between the GameCube and Game Boy Advance versions.

Mario Power Tennis (Wii)

On the Wii is Mario Power Tennis only as "New Play Control!" - version. Few changes have occurred here, so the new controls and NGC controller are no longer compatible with the game.

Mario Tennis Open (Nintendo 3DS)

At Nintendo's press conference on their Nintendo 3DS mobile console for the Tokyo Games Show on September 12, 2011, a Mario tennis offshoot for the 3DS was announced. It was released on May 25, 2012 and makes use of the glasses-free 3D effect and the console's gyroscope . There are also extensive online functions.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U)

On June 16, 2015, as part of the Nintendo Digital Event in 2015 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was announced. The game was released exclusively for the Wii U on November 21, 2015 and brought some innovations such as the maxi mushroom from the Super Mario Bros. -Games that make the player great, with improved graphics and new playing techniques. In addition, you can now train Amiibo for double combat together with the player.

Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo Switch)

Mario Tennis Aces was released on June 22, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch . Like its predecessors, the game was developed by Camelot . In addition to the conventional controller control, this game can also be played using motion control with a Joy-Con as a bat .

For the first time since Mario Power Tennis , the game has a story mode. This has missions, boss fights, etc. There are more than 15 playable characters. For the first time you can also play a chain dog , a spike and a blooper .

Another new addition is the energy display, which fills up over time or through the newly added trick strokes. There are three new gameplay mechanics that consume energy: the target stroke, a stroke in which the player determines by movement control where the ball hits exactly, the super slow motion, a technique by which a stroke can be performed in slow motion, and the special stroke can destroy the opponent's bat with one hit.

Mario Tennis Aces was first announced during a Nintendo Direct on January 11, 2018. During another direct on March 8, 2018, the game was presented in more detail and June 22, 2018 was given as the release date.

After its release, Mario Tennis Aces was the best-selling game of July. As of June 30, 2018, 1.38 million units of the game had sold.
