Wario

A cosplayer as Wario

Wario ( Japanese. ワ リ オ ) is a video game character by Hiroji Kiyotake , who was created as an antagonist to the Nintendo character Mario and who initially faced him as a greedy villain. Wario made his debut in 1992 as the head villain and final boss in the Game Boy game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins . As a playable protagonist , Wario first appeared in Wario Land - Super Mario Land 3 in 1994 . S ince have appeared numerous other platformers run games with Wario. Wario has other appearances in the framework of the games of the WarioWare series, which appeared in 2004, and in various offshoots of the Mario series.

The name "Wario" originated from a play on words with the name "Mario" and the Japanese adjective warui ( 悪 い ) for bad , hence it means "bad Mario". In English, this meaning is (incorrectly) made clear by playing on the noun war for war .

Appearance

Wario's emblem that he wears on his cap

Wario is an overweight, if very muscular and red-nosed caricature of an Italian villain, its design based on the appearance of Mario. This was modified in such a way that the hero embodied by Mario became an antihero figure.

The yellow peaked cap and the purple overall over a yellow T-shirt are characteristic. This color combination is already an attack on the eye and the opposite of Mario's pleasant appearance. (Note that the colors yellow and purple act as a complementary contrast in a dissonance , as was also used in particular by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh ). Wario fulfills further stylistic characteristics of a villain through his evil, insidious and mean look, his plump, malicious smile and his thick, red-tinged nose . Like Mario, he too wears a mustache , which, due to its jagged shape, is in no way appealing, but corresponds to the villain scheme. To complete the image of the villain, Wario also has a crazy laugh.

Wario's “ trademark ” and identification symbol is the “W” that adorns both his clothing and his architecture. Metaphorically , the reversal of the letter “M” to “W” also implies the reversal of all attributes and values - further evidence of Wario's role as an opponent. Mario's victory symbol , which he shows after completing a level to victory, becomes Wario's "Wario symbol" by using three fingers to refer to himself self-centeredly.

In the " WarioWare " game series, however, Wario can usually be found in a biker outfit. He wears a red and yellow helmet and fingerless gloves - all decorated with a "W" of course - as well as a worn denim jacket over a light blue T-shirt, pink trousers and old-fashioned aviator goggles on the helmet. In some mini-games he again has theme-specific manifestations, for example as a pinball machine (where he shoots pinballs out of his nostrils), as a swimmer in a striped swim suit or as a stick figure.

Wario wears pointed shoes on his feet . They are green or blue (only for the biker outfit).

In Mario Kart: Double Dash !! Wario drives a long purple Mafia body, the "Wario Sleigh", and throws bombs that Mario fans know as "Bob Ombs". In connection with the attributes mentioned at the beginning, this representation could be interpreted as an allusion to a Mafia boss, but nothing in this regard is evident from official information from Nintendo.

Its absurd appearance is ridiculed by many designers. Wario is often described by Toad in the DS game Super Mario 64 DS as "terrible" (which Toad then quickly changes to "terribly healthy"). Many games also refer to his preference for garlic : he is often said to have lazy breath.

history

For the first time, Wario appeared as Mario's opponent in the Game Boy game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins . He had taken possession of Mario's castle, but in the end lost to Mario and had to give it back.

He then started his own video game career as a protagonist of platformers Run -Play. After four Wario Land -Play for the various Game Boy systems appeared with the GameCube -Titel Wario World for the first Wario platformers runs in 3D . In the Game Boy Advance game WarioWare, Inc .: Minigame Mania is Wario tried for the first time as a game developer , thereby laying the foundation for a series of failed mini-game collections for Game Boy Advance, GameCube and Nintendo DS and finally Wii : the WarioWare - Line. With Wario Land: The Shake Dimension , a 2D-based platformer appeared again in 2008 for the Wii.

backgrounds

Wario was introduced as Mario's new adversary in Super Mario Land 2 . Basically, he plays a modified form of the evil doppelganger who makes use of the power items (otherwise intended for Mario) in the final boss fight.

What distinguishes Wario from Mario (apart from his grotesque appearance) is the fact that Mario mostly appears as a selfless hero, while Wario is characterized primarily by rowdy behavior and extreme greed. While Mario saves princesses and countries, Wario prefers to look for treasures to expand his wealth.

In other games, Wario's villain image was slightly weakened. Wario can now often be seen in the role of the more or less typical antihero , who tends to leave moral concerns indifferent in his adventures and who primarily thinks of himself, but also does good (usually without noticing it himself). Although it is fundamentally important to look for treasure or (in the case of Wario Land 2) to fight off the revenge of the Black Sugar Pirates, villains are trimmed by the way, stolen goods believed to be lost are found and cursed people are rescued.

Others

Wario differs from Mario in his skills. Wario can perform a jostle and throw his opponents away. Wario doesn't just trample his opponents, if they jump on their head they are paralyzed, Wario can pick them up and throw them around. Alternatively, he crushes them with his stomp jump.

Wario's archenemy is Captain Syrup (in German Käpt'n Kandis ), the leader of the Black Sugar Gang. In Wario Land - Super Mario Land 3, she owns a magic lamp whose genie Wario is supposed to help to build a longed-for castle. Ironically, the genie demands fair payment for its services. Further opponents of Wario are the clown Rudy from Wario Land 3 , the Golden Diva from Wario Land 4 , King Rüttelbert from Wario Land: The Shake Dimension and the Dark Jewel from Wario World .

While Wario relies on three PowerUp "helmets" (dragon, bull and jet) for his first appearance as the main actor in Wario Land - Super Mario Land 3 , Nintendo introduced a kind of immortality in Wario Land 2 and 3 ; When it comes into contact with enemies and traps, Wario's form changes at most, which is also associated with a change in his abilities and is often quite desirable. In Wario Land 4 , however, Wario's invulnerability was renounced again, but its possibilities for transformation remained largely untouched.

In the Wario-Master of Disguise for Nintendo DS, published in Germany on June 1, 2007, Wario becomes a real quick-change artist thanks to a stolen wand. With the help of the touch pen he becomes an astronaut, dragon, captain, devil, inventor or artist. Its normal appearance here is thief-fingered Wario, which also has differences to its other versions. He has a kind of helmet with a feather on his head, which makes him look even more villainous. His trademark red nose with a zigzag mustache, however, remains untouched.

Wario, like almost all other Mario characters, is spoken by Charles Martinet .

Waluigi

The companion of Warios is Waluigi , so to speak the "bad Luigi": In the Japanese language there is no distinction between / l / and / r /, so the name Waluigi (Japanese ワ ル イ ー ジ Waruīji ) comes from the Japanese word warui for "bad" . Waluigi's appearance is a kind of cross between Wario's clothes and face and the enormous agility of Luigis, his cousin. Waluigi's very long legs, which help him to jump very high, the upwards jagged mustache and his towering double chin are particularly typical. Waluigi first appeared in Mario Tennis 64 , which appeared in Europe on November 3, 2000, and was primarily intended to oppose a personal opponent in analogy to the Mario-Wario pairing, Luigi. Since then he has been featured in many games in the Mario series, e.g. B. in Mario Kart DS and Mario Slam Basketball . Waluigi's symbol is an upside-down "L", which is a reference to Luigi, whose symbol is the "L". The purple clothing is the opposite of Luigi's green clothing.

Like Wario, Waluigi is voiced by Charles Martinet .
