Mario Kart: Double Dash !! ( jap. マ リ オ カ ー ト ダ ブ ル ダ ッ シ ュ !! , Mario Kāto: Daburu Dasshu !! ; "Double Dash" can be translated as "double punch ") is the fourth game in the Mario Kart series. It was released by Nintendo in November 2003 .

Gameplay

The player controls karts occupied by drivers selected by him. With these karts, races are held on various routes, which are divided into so-called cups (mushroom cup, tank cup, flower cup, star cup and special cup) and usually increasing in difficulty. The aim of the game is to win the gold cup in all cups. Items are available to the player that can positively influence the outcome of the race. The specialty of Mario Kart: Double Dash !! is that the karts are manned by two drivers. One driver controls the kart, the other is responsible for using the items. This is the only part of the Mario Kart series where that is possible.

Grand Prix

In Grand Prix mode, the player first selects one of four levels of difficulty, then two drivers and a kart. Not all karts can be used by all drivers. The weight class plays a major role here. Heavy drivers, such as Donkey Kong, can therefore only use karts designed for heavy drivers. The same applies to the other weight classes. You can then contest a racing series, a so-called "Cup", with the selected drivers. These cups consist of four races with 3 laps each. After the race, points are awarded for the rank achieved. Whoever achieved the highest number of points at the end of the cup wins it. At the award ceremony, the winning team receives a trophy, and if a new time record is achieved, the player can also enter three letters as a name. The Grand Prix can also be played by two players. They can choose whether everyone competes in their own kart or whether they want to operate a kart in pairs. In this case one player controls the kart and the other player uses the items.

Time trial

In the time trial, races are run over a set number of laps. The race time and lap time are measured. The best results are saved in a leaderboard. Both the driver and the passenger receive a single-use mushroom as an item.

Versus

In this mode, 2-4 players can compete against each other on a selected route.

competition

In competition mode, several players can compete against each other in three different types of competition in different arenas. There is the balloon competition , the theft of insignia and the bob-omb throw . In the balloon competition, all karts are equipped with three balloons. If the kart is hit by an item or if you drive over an obstacle, you lose one of these balloons. The winner of this competition is the player who is last left with one or more balloons. Insignia theft is about keeping an insignia of the sun, which was introduced in Super Mario Sunshine , over your kart for a certain period of time. The teammates must try to remove them from the player who wears the insignia. In the bob omb throw, the players throw bob oms at each other. You get one point for each hit. Whoever was able to get hold of a certain number of points first wins this competition.

Characters

Mario Kart: Double Dash !! With 20 selectable drivers, it contains the third most characters in the Mario Kart series after Mario Kart 8 (36 drivers) and Mario Kart Wii (25 drivers). The drivers appear in teams, but drivers from different teams can also be combined. The drivers have different weight classes, and each driver can use his own kart, although many of the karts must first be activated. In addition, the teams can only use karts that are designed for their weight class, whereby the weight of the heaviest driver is decisive. For example, if you drive with the Donkey Kong (difficult) and Diddy Kong (easy) team , you can only use a kart that is designed for heavy drivers.

The following table shows the driver teams. The drivers standing among each other always form a team (each character has a so-called special item, which only he can receive). So if you choose a team, the chances are that you will get this item. The value in brackets stands for the weight class (the heavier, the worse the acceleration, but the higher the maximum speed is set and the less likely you are usually pushed away).

Mario (medium) Peach (medium) Yoshi (medium) Baby mario (easy) Koopa (easy) Donkey Kong (difficult) Bowser (difficult) Wario (difficult) Toad (easy) Mutant Tyranha (hard)
Luigi (medium) Princess Daisy (medium) Birdo (medium) Baby Luigi (easy) Paracoopa (easy) Diddy Kong (easy) Bowser Jr. (easy) Waluigi (medium) Toadette (easy) King Buu Huu (difficult)

The characters Toad , Toadette , Mutant-Tyranha and King Buu Huu are not available from the start, but must first be unlocked .

Items & routes

In Mario Kart: Double Dash !! there are a whole range of items available to the player that can influence the race. Special feature of Mario Kart: Double Dash !! is that every driver team, as already mentioned, can use special items. Exceptions are the unlockable drivers Mutant-Tyranha and King Buu Huu , they can access all special items, but get them less often than the main team. All drivers can use all special items in the balloon competition and insignia theft competitions.

In Mario Kart: Double Dash !! 16 newly designed routes are available. So-called “retro tracks”, such as those found in Mario Kart Wii, that is, tracks from other Mario Kart parts that have been reworked, are available in Mario Kart: Double Dash !! Not. In addition to the 16 Grand Prix tracks, there are various competition arenas.

success

From Mario Kart: Double Dash !! 6.88 million units were sold. This makes it the sixth most successful game in the Mario Kart series. After Super Smash Bros. Melee , Mario Kart: Double Dash !! the second most successful video game from Nintendo GameCube .

Also the reviews of Mario Kart: Double Dash !! were consistently positive.

“There isn't much to write about this game because there is nothing to complain about. The level of difficulty is more than fair, the many new features add even more fun than ever before and the fact that there are even unlockable characters and karts makes the heart of every collector's friend beat faster. Mario Kart: Double Dash !! is a more than successful continuation of the Mario Kart series and once again creates new opportunities to have a lot of fun alone or with friends for a long time. If you liked the first parts of this series, you shouldn't ask yourself whether you should get this game - a must buy for fans of the series, clearly. "
