Mark Münzel

Mark Münzel (born March 29, 1943 in Potsdam ) is a German ethnologist , university professor and museum employee. Between 1973 and 1989 he was curator of the Völkerkundemuseum in Frankfurt am Main , and from 1990 until his retirement in 2008 he was a professor for ethnology at the University of Marburg .

Life

Münzel graduated from the humanistic Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main in 1962 . Between 1962 and 1966 and again from 1969 to 1970 he studied ethnology, Romance studies and folklore in Coimbra (Portugal). In 1964 he graduated from the Curso Superior de Língua Portuguesa in Coimbra , which qualified him as a Portuguese language teacher abroad. From 1966 to 1968 he stayed in Brazil on a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation ; he studied at the Instituto Joaquim Nabuco in Recife ( Pernambuco ) and researched the Kamayurá ethnic group at Lake Ipavú and the Makú at the Rio Uneiuxi (area of ​​the Rio Negro , northwestern Amazonia) . Between 1969 and 1971 Münzel was an assistant at the Department of Ethnology. In 1970 he did his PhD in ethnology with Eike Haberland in Frankfurt am Main with a thesis on ghost ideas and medicine men of the Kamayurá (Alto Xingu - Brazil). In 1971 and 1972 he stayed for a field research project of the German Research Foundation with the Aché in Paraguay, and in 1972 in Cusco (Peru) to prepare an exhibition at the Frankfurt Museum.

From 1973 to 1989 Münzel was curator at the Völkerkundemuseum in Frankfurt (today's Museum of World Cultures ). From 1990 until his retirement in 2008 he was Professor of Ethnology at the University of Marburg. There he was also in charge of the ethnological collection of the Philipps University and took over the overall management of the exhibitions there. Between 1978 and 1986 he researched (partly together with Bernhard Streck and Reimer Gronemeyer ) on “parking lots and motorway parking lots” Roma . The outcome of the project was the journal (later series of publications) Gießener Tsiganologische Hefte, which was published since 1984. The project on tsiganology was financed by the German Society for Peace and Conflict Research at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Giessen .

Münzel has been married since 1966.
