BrandA antioquiensis is a plant type from the genus BrandA within the family of the nightshade family .

description

Vegetative characteristics

BrandA antioquiensis grows as epiphytic shrub , as halbepiphytische Liana or up to two meters high nascent small sapling . The stems are fleshy, flexible and hairless, on older stems a thin, paper-like bark forms that dries orange-green. The leaves are in clusters of about six leaves. Your leaf blade is elliptical to ovate, (rarely only 4) 10 to 25 centimeters wide and (rarely only 8) 10 to 45 centimeters long. The upper side is hairless, the underside is covered with short, papillary , possibly glandular and brownish drying trichomes 0.02 millimeters long. The leaf blade has six or seven pairs of leaf veins that dry brown on the underside. The base is cut off to rounded, the leaf blades are pointed towards the front, the outermost tip is slightly pointed. The leaf stalks are 1.5 to 6 inches long and hairless.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are axillary, grape- like, mostly unbranched cymes with a length of 4 to 10 centimeters. They usually contain between four and ten flowers . The axes of the inflorescences are hairless or hairy with a few, scattered, single-row trichomes 1 millimeter long , consisting of two or three cells, which become somewhat denser towards the tip . On each flower there are two linear, rarely hairy, stipule-like bracts with a length of 0.7 to 1 centimeter, which are soon thrown off.

The buds are elongated, the bud covering of the crown is cochlear, that of the sepals valvat. The calyx is split to about 1/2 the length at the time of flowering, the points of attachment of the sepals merge at the base like wings into the peduncle . The calyx lobes are elliptical, 1.5 to 3 inches wide and 5 to 7 inches long, the ends are rounded and have a small, pointed tip. The color of the calyx is white or cream, it has protruding veins and is membranous and puffy. It is covered with trichomes that are similar to those of the leaves. The flower stalk is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and has hairs similar to that of the calyx. The crown is 7 to 9 centimeters long, funnel-shaped and cream-colored except for the reddish-purple corolla lobes and the purple base of the corolla tube. About 1 centimeter above the base it suddenly widens and then merges evenly into the corolla lobes, with the distal side being slightly more widened. The corolla tube is 6 to 8 centimeters long, the corolla lobes are rounded, hairless and 1 to 1.5 × 1 to 2 centimeters in size.

The stamens start about 1.2 centimeters above the base of the corolla tube, they are 2.5 to 3 centimeters in size and have very few (usually about four) single-row trichomes at the point of attachment to the corolla tube. The anthers are elongated, 1.8 to 2.3 inches long and 1.5 millimeters wide. The filament attaches to the base of the dust bag. The ovary is conical, hairless and has a large, purple flower base. The stylus is 4.5 to 5 centimeters long and suddenly widens to form a hairless, head-shaped scar .

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is an elliptical berry that is 3.5 to 4 inches long and about 2 inches wide. When ripe it is green or yellowish-green in color. The pericarp dries up into a thin, paper-like and translucent shell. The fruits contain about 100 rectangular seeds with a size of 3 to 3.5 × 1.5 to 2 millimeters. They are orange-yellow in color, the surface of the seed consists of square to rectangular depressions, the hilum is at the end of the seed.

Occurrence

The species is found in the premontane forests of northwestern Colombia on the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental at altitudes between 1300 and 2000 meters.

Systematics and botanical history

Markea antioquiensis was first described by Sandra Knapp in 1998 . Previously, herbarium specimens were assigned to different plant species, including those from the gentian family (Gentianaceae). The species is most similar to Markea pilosa , but differs from it by the hairless leaves, inflorescence axes with also only sparse trichomes and the significantly larger calyx lobes. The epithet refers to the Colombian province of Antioquia , from which the collected specimens of the species came.
