Marko Veselica

Marko Veselica (born January 9, 1936 in Glavice near Sinj ; † February 17, 2017 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav functionary ( BdKJ ) and, as one of the leaders of the " Croatian Spring ", a well-known dissident and political prisoner . After Croatia's independence , he was a Croatian politician for the Croatian Democratic Party (HDS) .

Life

Veselica was the son of a fallen Tito partisan . As a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia , he was a youth and student official. He studied and graduated economics at the University of Zagreb and taught political economy together with savka dabčević-kučar . Veselica was elected to the Presidium and Council of the Trade Unions of Croatia and was a member of the Croatian capital Zagreb in the Yugoslav Parliament in Belgrade . He was expelled from the party in July 1971 as one of the leaders of the “ Croatian Spring ”. In 1972 he was seven years heavy prison in prison Stara Gradiska sentenced and released in 1977, shortly after Amnesty International had named him the "prisoner of the month [October 1977]." After an interview for the news magazine Der Spiegel , Veselica was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the communist regime of Yugoslavia as a “Croatian nationalist”. After imprisonment, he went into exile .

During the breakup of Yugoslavia and Croatia's impending independence , Veselica returned from exile and was one of the founding members of the Croatian Democratic Party (HDS) in 1990 .

Veselica died on the morning of February 17, 2017 at the age of 81 in Zagreb.
