Markus Brüderlin (born May 25, 1958 in Basel ; † March 16, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Swiss art historian , curator and publicist . From 2006 until his death he was director of the Wolfsburg Art Museum .

Markus Brüderlin studied art history, art education, philosophy and German in Vienna. His doctorate was on the importance of ornament for abstract art of the 20th century .

He initially worked as a freelance exhibition maker and journalist and was the founder of the Kunstraum Wien and the magazine Springer . From 1994 to 1996, Brüderlin worked as an art curator for the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts and was responsible for the distribution of funding. After returning to Switzerland, he was head curator of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel from 1996 to 2004 , where he was involved in setting up the Fondation Beyeler based on plans by the architect Renzo Piano .

Since January 2006, Brüderlin has been the director of the Wolfsburg Art Museum. In May 2008 he was appointed honorary professor at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts .

Brüderlin was in charge of the AURA exhibitions . Vienna Secession (1994), Ornament and Abstraction (2001), Anselm Kiefer . The Seven Heavenly Palaces 1973–2001 (2001/02), Expressive! (2003) and ArchiSkulptur (2004/06). Japan and the West followed as director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg . The Void Filled (2007), James Turrell . The Wolfsburg Project (2009), Rudolf Steiner and Contemporary Art (2010), Alberto Giacometti . The Origin of Space (2010) and The Art of Deceleration (2011).

Markus Brüderlin was the editor and author of many art historical publications. He died in March 2014 at the age of 55 in his place of residence in Frankfurt am Main.
