Markus Gestier

Markus Gestier (born February 18, 1962 in St. Ingbert ) is a German politician ( CDU ).

Markus Gestier was born the son of Regional Court Director Ernst Gestier, who was CDU parliamentary group leader in the St. Ingbert city council in the 1970s. His grandfather Georg Bleif was Mayor of St. Ingbert from 1948 to 1956. Gestier attended the Albert Weisgerber School in St. Ingbert from 1968 to 1972 and the Leibniz Gymnasium in St. Ingbert from 1972 to 1981 . From 1981 to 1983 he studied political science , history , law and economics at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . Then he moved to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he studied politics and law as well as modern history from 1983 to 1987. In 1988 he graduated with a Magister Artium and in 1991 he received his doctorate as a student of Karl Dietrich Bracher .

From 1988 to 1991 Gestier was a seminar assistant at the Union Foundation in Saarbrücken and from 1991 to 1994 academic trainee lawyer and exhibition organizer at the House of History in Bonn . He then worked as a research assistant at the German-American Institute and the German Atlantic Society in Saarbrücken from 1994 to 1996 , before returning to the Union Foundation to work as a director of studies from 1996 to 2008. After his membership in the state parliament he was again director of studies at the Union Foundation.

Gestier held various board positions at the Junge Union in Bonn and St. Ingbert from 1985 to 1997 . From 1989 to 2011 he was a member of the board of the CDU St. Ingbert, from 1995 also as deputy local chairman. From 1989 to 1991 he was a member of the St. Ingbert local council and from 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the district board of the CDU district association Saarpfalz. From 1998 to 2012 he was a member of the CDU city association board of St. Ingbert and from 1999 to 2016 a member of the city council of the Mittelstadt St. Ingbert, where he was parliamentary group leader of the CDU from 2000 to 2012. In November 2008 he replaced Klaus Roth in the Saarland state parliament , to which he was a member until the end of the 2009 legislative period. There he was a member of the “Submissions”, “Economy, Science and Mine Safety”, “Labor, Health and Social” and “Environment” committees.

Gestier is Roman Catholic and married. From 1999 to 2013 he was chairman of the swimming club and the swimming friends St. Ingbert 1911. He is chairman of the Saarpfalz charity.
