Markus Heinzelmann (* 1965 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German art historian, curator and museum director.

Life

Heinzelmann grew up in Frankfurt am Main. In 1984/85 he completed his general studies at the Leibniz College in Tübingen. 1985 to 1987 he did his community service at the Tübingen Association for Social Therapy for Children and Adolescents eV / Tübingen Youth Housing Groups. Heinzelmann studied art history, political science, medieval and modern history at the University of Münster , where he in 1997 in art history with a thesis on "Landscape painting of New Objectivity and its reception at the time of National Socialism" doctorate was.

From 1997 to 1999 Heinzelmann worked as a research assistant at the Sprengel Museum Hannover . From there he moved to Munich and worked as a project manager for fine arts at the Siemens Arts Program. From May 2006 to February 2018 he headed the Morsbroich Museum in Leverkusen.

Curatorial work

Heinzelmann specializes in the art of classical modernism and the present. In 1999 he reconstructed the rescue of Emil Nolde's work from being seized by the National Socialists by the Hanoverian factory owner and art collector Bernhard Sprengel . The year before, he had researched Ernst Schwitters' collection and was able to present it for the first time under the title The Great Dadagluten (Hanover, Ishøj, Santiago de Compostela, Lisbon, Madrid 1998/1999) .

A particular focus of Heinzelmann's curatorial work is photography. He was responsible for exhibitions such as Albert Renger-Patzsch / Thomas Struth: Photographs from Münster (Münster 1996/1997), The Photographer's Contract (Berlin, Leverkusen 2006/2007), Gerhard Richter. From 2007 to 2011 Markus Heinzelmann worked on the project to set up a collection and research center in the Museum Morsbroich Wolf Vostell and the Fluxus movement in North Rhine-Westphalia. Due to financial difficulties and disagreement between Heinzelmann and the Wolf Vostell heirs, this project could not be realized. Originally, Rolf Wedewer was the initiator of this project.

In the field of contemporary art, Heinzelmann is known for his thematic exhibitions, with which he repeatedly worked on pressing social issues. Plug-in. Unity and Mobility (Münster 2001) thematized the reception of the modular architectural visions of the 1960s in the present; At your own risk (Frankfurt 2003), devoted to the topic of risk; Against the grain. New forms of drawing (Baden-Baden 2004) showed the dissolution of traditional generic terms; Return to Space (Hamburg 2005) once again addressed the question of the reception of utopian ideals in a negotiated society. With the exhibition Ceramic Rooms. Lucio Fontana, Norbert Prangenberg, Thomas Schütte, Rosemarie Trockel, Markus Karstieß , Heinzelmann researched the extraordinary history of the reception of Lucio Fontana's art in the Rhineland in 2014. This was followed by calm before the storm. Post-minimalist art from the Rhineland in 2015 with the processing of American Minimal Art by artists such as Joseph Beuys , Isa Genzken , Sigmar Polke , Gerhard Richter , Rosemarie Trockel , which led to a joint development of postmodern art in New York and the Rhineland around 1977 .
