Markus Hengstschläger (born April 28, 1968 in Linz ) is an Austrian geneticist .

Life

Hengstschläger studied genetics at the University of Vienna and did his doctorate at the Vienna Biocenter. After a research stay at Yale University in the USA, he headed the genetic laboratory of the Vienna Women's Clinic and completed his habilitation. Hengstschläger was finally appointed professor for medical genetics at the Medical University of Vienna . Hengstschläger also has completed training as a human geneticist. Today he is head of the Institute for Medical Genetics and organizational unit head of the Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics at the Medical University of Vienna and heads the genetic department of the Institute for Fertility in Vienna. He teaches students and works in the fields of genetic diagnostics, basic research and innovation consulting. He is also a much sought-after speaker and presenter of the medicine and science program “Radiodoktor” on ORF radio Ö1 . He is u. a. Deputy Chairman of the Council for Research and Technology Development , Deputy Chairman of the Austrian Bioethics Commission at the Federal Chancellery , Scientific Director of the Academia Superior think tank and member of the University Council of the Johannes Kepler University Linz .

Hengstschläger found international recognition through his research on the hereditary disease tuberous sclerosis, through the discovery of stem cells in human amniotic fluid , through his research on the question of which fetal stem cells migrate into the maternal body during pregnancy or the communication potential of human stem cells, as well as through his innovations in the Field of genetic diagnostics.
