Maroš Kolpak (born March 23, 1971 in Prešov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak handball goalkeeper .

The 1.90 m tall Kolpak played 71 international matches for Slovakia. He started playing handball at the age of 10. First on the position in the back center . After the first competitive game, he switched to goal on the advice of his brother Stanislav. In March 1997, the then German second division TSV Baden Östringen took him under contract, which later became part of SG Kronau / Östringen . Due to a dispute about his classification as a third-country national with limited quantities within the framework of the foreigner restriction, he led a legal dispute with the German Handball Federation, which was submitted to the European Court of Justice for a preliminary ruling by the Hamm Higher Regional Court at the end of 2000 after the first instance was victorious for him . In the subsequent Kolpak decision , the court extended the Bosman decision to associated third countries - such as Kolpak's home country Slovakia at the time. In the United Kingdom, cricket and rugby players who are no longer affected by alien restrictions because of this ruling are named Kolpaks .

A cruciate ligament rupture suffered in January 2003 was one of the reasons why SG Kronau / Östringen was relegated to the 2nd handball league one year after its promotion . At the end of the 2006/2007 season he ended his engagement in the German handball league. Since then he has been the goalkeeping coach of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen , but still has the right to play SVH Kassel ( Oberliga ). With this team, in whose training he did not participate, he was promoted to the regional league in 2008 . In the 2008/09 season Kolpak played again as a “stand-by goalkeeper” for the Rhein-Neckar Löwen .
