Maroulas

Maroulas ( Greek Μαρουλάς ( m. Sg. )) Is a mountain village in the municipality of Rethymno in the municipality of Rethymno on the Greek island of Crete . The village with 486 inhabitants forms together with the hamlet Dilofo (Δίλοφο, 61 inhabitants) the local community of Maroulas. The village is located about three kilometers inland on the north coast of Crete, east of the Platanas stream .

history

Maroulas was founded in the Byzantine - Venetian period of Crete. It looks back on a history of over 800 years. Despite many earthquakes, several buildings from this period have been preserved in the village . Two residential towers from the late phase of the Venetian rule, probably from the first half of the 17th century, have been preserved.

Found burial chambers with vaulted ceilings suggest that the site of today's village was already settled in the Minoan period. There are reliable sources, however, about the Byzantine period from the book "The Cretan War" by Marinos Tzane Bounialis . Maroulas was first mentioned in 1577 by Francesco Barozzi under the name Marula .

After the catastrophe in Asia Minor , around 100 families from Ionia later found a new home here.
