Roussospiti ( Greek Ρουσσοσπίτι ( n. Sg. )) Is a village with the status of a local community in the municipality of Rethymno in the municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete .

location

Roussospiti is located about 4.5 kilometers southeast of Rethymno between two dry streams on a foothill of the Vrysinas (Βρύσινας) at an altitude of 300 meters. The nearest town is Chromonastiri 1.5 kilometers east.

Origin of name and history

Greek spiti means 'house', the front part of the name may go back to Italian rosso 'red' - as a name for a house in the village - or it. Russo 'Russe' or Russa 'Russin', according to which a Russian woman would have built a house in the village.

The earliest mention of Russospiti comes from the Venetian period . During the Ottoman period , the place was initially inhabited by Orthodox Christians and Muslims. The 1670 census recorded both Christian and Muslim villagers for Rusi İspiti . An entry in the ledger of the Qādī of Candia attests to the Islamization of Christian residents for 1671.

Churches and other sights

  • The Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) is a small single-nave church that was built in the early 14th century.
  • The fountain in Roussospiti dates from the 17th century. The water outlet is shaped like a lion's head.
