The Marstemgau or Marstengau , Merstem was a medieval district in Engern, Saxony . It lay west and south of Hanover and included the Calenberger Land to the Steinhuder Meer . The Gudingau bordered to the south, the Bukkigau to the west , the Loingau and the Gau Astfala to the east and the Grindergau to the north . Since the Saxon Wars of Charlemagne around 800, the Marstemgau belonged to the diocese of Minden and was divided into the archdeaconate Pattensen and Wunstorf .

The count's rights were in the hands of the Billunger from 955 to 1106 . At the beginning of the 12th century they were with the Counts of Schwalenberg . Then they passed to the Counts of Roden .
