Martin Vasquez (born December 24, 1963 in Jalisco , Mexico ; Spanish spelling: Martín Vásquez ) is a former American football player and current football coach .

Player career

society

Vasquez moved to Los Angeles at the age of 12 , but went back to Mexico to play for the Leones Negros de la UdeG . He then played college soccer at California State University in Los Angeles from 1980 to 1983 and then professional soccer and indoor soccer for five more years.

He made his debut in the Mexican league for the club U de G (Universidad de Guadalajara, not to be confused with UAG Tecos ) where he played from 1988 to 1990. In 1990/91 Vasquez played for Puebla FC and 1991/92 for CD Veracruz . In 1992 he went to Atlas Guadalajara , which he stayed with until his return to the USA in 1996.

In 1996 he moved to the now defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny club and stayed there until 1997, before rounding off his career at San Jose Clash in 1998 .

National team

Between 1990 and 1992 Vasquez wore the jersey of the Mexican national team three times , but only in unofficial friendly matches, as the Mexicans were banned from all international matches at that time due to manipulation of birth dates by FIFA . After receiving US citizenship, Steve Sampson called him up for seven games on the US national team. This was possible because his games for Mexico were unofficial. The midfielder played his first game for the US team on December 21, 1996 in a 2-2 draw against the Guatemala national soccer team . A year later, on November 16, 1997, Vasquez was appointed for the last time for the American selection.

Coaching career

After Vasquez had ended his active career, he worked as an assistant coach from 1999 to 2000 at Cal Poly Pomona and the now defunct women's team San Diego Spirit (2001-2002). After a season as assistant coach at Los Angeles Galaxy , Vasquez worked as a coach assistant at Deportivo Chivas USA from 2005 .

For the 2008/09 season he moved to Europe and was assistant coach to Jürgen Klinsmann at Bayern Munich . After Klinsmann was dismissed as a coach on April 27, 2009, Vasquez also had to vacate his post. A short time later both left Europe and returned to North America.

On December 2, 2009, Vasquez was head coach at Deportivo Chivas USA. There he took over the post of Predrag Radosavljević, who had been dismissed three weeks earlier . This was the first chief supervisor station; he was released after just one season.

After Jürgen Klinsmann had become the coach of the US national soccer team in 2011 , he hired Vasquez as an assistant coach.
