At the beginning of her sports career, Gjefsen was an alpine ski racer , but she never made it to the top of the world. In 2008 she won an FIS race in the giant slalom discipline and came third at the Norwegian championships in downhill . In the 2008/09 season she switched to ski cross. She made her debut in the World Cup on February 19, 2009 in Myrdalen-Voss , where she finished 28th and thus won her first World Cup points. The best result in their inaugural season was a 14th place. In the same year she won the first of a total of four Norwegian ski cross championship titles.
Gjefsen's breakthrough came in the 2009/10 season . On January 20, 2010, she achieved her first World Cup victory on Blue Mountain , which was followed by two third places. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , she was eleventh. After a moderate start to the season, it improved in the course of winter 2010/11 and celebrated its second World Cup victory on March 3, 2011 in Grindelwald . A month earlier she had finished eighth at the 2011 World Championships . In the 2011/12 World Cup season , a second place was her best result. She celebrated the greatest success of her career at the Winter X Games 2012 when she won the gold medal. In the 2012/13 World Cup season , she again achieved a podium finish.
