Martin Luther Church in Zeuthen

The Martin Luther Church , inaugurated on December 21, 1914 , a simple structure with an apse and a tower attached to the side, is attributed to the late Art Nouveau . The place Zeuthen received its first church. The church has been a listed building since 1985 and is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Zeuthen .

history

The three places Zeuthen , Miersdorf and Gersdorf are described for the first time in 1375 in Charles IV's land book . In 1860 the small village of Zeuthen had only 122 inhabitants. Gersdorf was mentioned for the last time in 1860 and was already known as the Wüstemark forestry.

There are no traces of a medieval chapel or small church in Zeuthen, although Zeuthen is referred to as a church village in a document. In the last third of the 19th century, building activity began, especially after the Zeuthen train station was inaugurated on November 1, 1897 on the Berlin – Görlitz railway line, which opened in 1866 . At first a church was out of the question. Miersdorf is a real farming village with a church in the 14th century. The rapid development of the population of Zeuthen had canceled the village character of the place. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the people of Zeuthen had to go to the church in the neighboring village of Miersdorf, until a room in the school in Zeuthen, which was completed in 1901, was available as a prayer room as a temporary solution. From Pentecost 1912 the prayer room became a classroom, now only the cemetery chapel was available. In Zeuthen, however, there was no parish of its own. Miersdorf was only a pastor itself from 1817, previously a daughter parish of the mother church of Waltersdorf , to which the daughter parishes Schulzendorf , Bohnsdorf and Grünau also belonged. The Waltersdorfer pastor, who was still responsible for Zeuthen, was no longer able to do justice to his task, because all the daughter parishes grew larger. According to the plans of the Royal Consistory in Berlin , Zeuthen was to be attached to the newly established pastorate in Eichwalde . The parish council protested against this. The parishes of Zeuthen and Miersdorf wanted to stay together. But it was not until 1957 that Miersdorf was merged with Zeuthen to form a municipality under the name of Zeuthen. On October 31, 1909, the Miersdorf - Zeuthen parish was rebuilt. Zeuthen was designated as the preacher's office. At the same time the connection with the old mother community Waltersdorf was broken. On September 20, 1911, the parsonage planned by the royal building officer Georg Büttner could be occupied. A few years later, the architect also designed the Zeuthen Martin Luther Church. The financing had been clarified, the church building site was given to the parish. The construction plan was approved on January 13, 1913, the foundation stone was laid on October 26 of the same year and the church was consecrated on December 21, 1914.

The Zeuthen Cantata Choir, an oratorio choir affiliated with the Evangelical Church District Neukölln, has been based in the Martin Luther Church since it was founded in 1972/73. With around 100 active members and regular oratorical performances, it is one of the largest and most powerful choirs in the state of Brandenburg. Annual choir trips and concerts abroad shape the activities of the choir.

building

The simple structure with a tower attached to the side contains a hall with an apse , a gallery for the organ and ancillary rooms. A barrel-shaped wooden coffered ceiling vaults the room. To the left of the apse is a baptistery. The gallery and organ are richly designed. In the hall, the essential architectural elements are emphasized by ornamental painting. The electrical lighting consists of incandescent lamps in a simple socket in part of the cassettes. The windows, five large at the top and fourteen small ones, are lead-glazed, those in the plinth are closed in a rounded arch. The four arched windows of the baptistery with the original baptismal font, which were willfully destroyed in 1968, were replaced by concrete glass surfaces. You should get lead glazing again. The glass windows were created by Otto Linnemann from Frankfurt am Main. A large arch delimits the nave. Above the richly designed apse, below the coffered ceiling, there is a large bust of Christ painted on the wall. The cafeteria and pulpit are made of gray artificial stone with sparing gilding. The original altarpiece was lost. Across from the altar area is the small chapel-like bridal hall.

Franz Markau was responsible for the painting of the church . The bell consists of three bells made of cast steel from the Bochumer Verein .
