The Martin Luther Road is a major urban north-south connection in Berlin district of Schoeneberg with a length of around 2.3 kilometers and leads from the Kleiststraße at the Urania to the main road just before the Innsbruck court .

Naming

The section south of Motzstrasse was called Rostocker Strasse from 1884 to 1893 and Heinrich-Kiepert-Strasse from 1893 to 1899, after the geographer Heinrich Kiepert (1818–1898). The street was named on December 28, 1899 after the theologian and church reformer Martin Luther (1483–1546). The section north of Motzstraße belonged to Charlottenburg until 1938 and was called Lutherstraße until 1963 .

Development

Coming from the north, the development can be described as post-war architecture as a result of the consequences of the Second World War up to Hohenstaufenstrasse and partly even further south . Paul Egeling's former fire station , which is a listed building , is located at Martin-Luther-Straße 46 . West of Grunewaldstrasse is the Bavarian Quarter, one of Berlin's preferred residential areas . The Schöneberg District Court is located on the corner of Grunewaldstrasse . Behind it follows on the eastern side the Wartburgplatz . Shortly after that, Martin-Luther-Strasse touches John-F.-Kennedy-Platz with Schöneberg Town Hall and then Rudolph-Wilde-Park as the beginning of Schöneberg City Park. The Senate Department for Economics is on the opposite side. Several buildings on Martin-Luther-Straße are listed.

traffic

The street between Kleiststrasse and Dominicusstrasse, which has eight lanes with a median (four to six lanes behind it), is mainly used for through traffic and connects the western city of Berlin with the southern districts of the capital. At the level of Motzstraße, the U4 line of the Berlin subway crosses the street. The Viktoria-Luise-Platz underground station is around 200 meters away . The U7 underground line crosses under Grunewaldstraße with the Eisenacher Straße underground station, which is around 200 meters away, and Bayerischer Platz underground station, which is around 300 meters away . Until 1964 a line of the Berlin tram ran through Martin-Luther-Straße.
