Martin Gächter (born November 11, 1939 in Basel ) is auxiliary bishop emeritus in the diocese of Basel .

Life

Martin Gächter graduated from the Basler Humanist Gymnasium , the oldest grammar school in Basel, in 1959 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Friborg, Munich, Lucerne, Paris and Solothurn from 1959 to 1963 . On 28 June 1967 he received in Delsberg the ordination and vicar was in Bern and Basel . From 1977 to 1987 he was pastor of the Heiliggeist parish in Basel .

After being elected by the Basel cathedral chapter , Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Betagbarar on February 3, 1987 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Basel. He was resident canon of the Solothurn estate. He received his episcopal ordination on May 28, 1987 in the Heiliggeistkirche in Basel from Basel Bishop Otto Wüst ; Co-consecrators were Anton Hänggi , former bishop of Basel, and Joseph Candolfi , auxiliary bishop in Basel. His motto is Servare unitatem spiritus ("Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit").

In the Swiss Bishops' Conference he was a member of the dicastery "Spiritual Communities" and "People on the Move" as well as a member of the commissions "Working Group on New Church Movements and Communities", "Migration" and "Commission for Tourism". In the diocese of Basel he was responsible for the 60 missions in other languages.

From 1987 to 2000 Martin Gächter was the youth bishop of Switzerland. From 1998 to 2010 he was president of the international association of altar servers CIM . He took part in the World Youth Meetings in Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2010), Madrid (2011) and Rio de Janeiro ( 2013).

On December 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.

Martin Gächter has been prior of the German-Swiss section of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem since 2003 , of which he has been a member since 1993. He has been a member of the Catholic student associations AV Leonina and AV Waldstättia Lucerne for student days.
