Martin Gorke

Martin Gorke (* 1958 in Stuttgart ) is a German biologist and environmental ethicist . He is currently professor of environmental ethics at the University of Greifswald and, along with Konrad Ott, is one of the most important German theorists of environmental and nature conservation ethics .

Life

Martin Gorke studied biology and philosophy at the Universities of Bochum and Bayreuth . In 1985 he finished his studies with a biology diploma ( zoology , botany , biogeography ) and received his doctorate in science in 1989 in Bayreuth with a dissertation on the behavioral ecology and population dynamics of the black-headed gull . In 1997 he received his doctorate in philosophy with a dissertation on the ethical dimension of species extinction .

From 1997 to 2002 he was a research assistant at the professorship for environmental ethics at the University of Greifswald, and from 2004 to 2005 he was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2008 he completed his habilitation in environmental ethics on the subject of the intrinsic value of nature. Ethical rationale and consequences . From 2010 to 2015 he was the area supervisor in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve for the DFG's “ Biodiversity Exploratories ” project.

In 2015 he was appointed to the professorship for environmental ethics at the University of Greifswald.

His main areas of work are holistic environmental ethics, species protection, scientific theory of ecology , natural philosophy, Albert Schweitzer and sea bird ecology .
