Martin Hollis

James Martin Hollis (born March 14, 1938 in London , † February 27, 1998 in Norwich ) was a British rationalist philosopher. He worked in particular on the epistemological foundations of the social sciences .

Live and act

Hollis was the son of a diplomat. From 1961 to 1963 he was a fellow at Harvard and Berkeley . There he met his future wife, Patricia Wells . From 1963 to 1966 he worked for the British Foreign Office, including in Heidelberg and Moscow . From 1967 until his death he was a lecturer at the University of East Anglia in Norwich , where he became a professor in 1982.

As a realist, Hollis believed that there are beliefs that apply to all people. In doing so, he turned against various forms of relativism . He was influenced by Peter Strawson , John Rawls and Willard Van Orman Quine .

A special focus of Hollis' work was the examination of the social sciences . He worked with representatives of various social science disciplines, including economists (e.g. Frank Hahn ), sociologists (e.g. Steven Lukes ) and political scientists . He also dealt intensively with game theory and social choice theory .

Hollis was a fellow of the British Academy . He wrote 10 books, was (co-) editor of 4 others and author of around 90 specialist articles. Between 1980 and 1987 he was editor of the English-German philosophy journal Ratio .

Hollis was a passionate chess and bridge player. His first book, Tantalizers , was a collection of chess puzzles previously published in New Scientist .

He died of a brain tumor .
