Martin Jander

Martin Jander (born January 21, 1955 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German historian , political scientist and journalist . One of his main focuses in research and publications is the history of the opposition in the GDR.

Life

Martin Jander studied German, history, sociology and political science in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the Free University of Berlin (FU). During this time he made contacts with opposition members in the GDR in West Berlin and followed their activities. 1984-1986 he worked as a lecturer for social politics and the history of the trade union movement at the DGB-Bundesschule in Hattingen, from 1989 to 1990 as trade union secretary in the education department of the ÖTV main board. In 1995 he received his doctorate with his dissertation on the formation and crisis of the GDR opposition at the Otto Suhr Institute .

From 1990 to 1995 he worked at the FU as a research assistant in the field of trade union research at the Central Institute for Social Science Research and from 1995 to 2000 in the SED State research association . He has been working as a freelance author and journalist since 2001, teaching German and European history in the Berlin programs of Stanford University and New York University as well as in the European Studies Program of the FU. He researches the history of German left- wing terrorism , a project funded by the Hamburg Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture .

His journalistic articles have appeared in TAZ , Tagesspiegel , HaGalil and in the Jüdischen Allgemeine .
