Association political activity

In 1968 Kannegiesser began to work in party and association politics. Since 1974 he has been a member of the CDU's SME Association.

  • 1975 Chairman of the Herford District Metal Employers' Association
  • 1983 Chairman of the Herford employers' association
  • 1988 Chairman of the vocational training center in the Herford district
  • 1994 negotiator for the Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry in North Rhine-Westphalia
  • 1996 chairman of this association

In 1997, Kannegiesser was elected Vice President of the Gesamtmetall employers' association. In this role he succeeded in negotiating with the trade unions in spring 2000 to prevent strikes. This success earned him great recognition in the employers' camp. On September 8, 2000 he succeeded Werner Stumpfe as President of Gesamtmetall.

In 2003, Kannegiesser got into tough collective bargaining disputes with IG Metall under the leadership of Klaus Zwickel , which led to a strike in the metal industry in the new federal states in June 2003 . In defending against the demand for the introduction of a 35-hour week according to the collective agreement in the new federal states, Kannegiesser achieved a great success against the unions in 2003.

Kannegiesser described the collective agreement with which Gesamtmetall and IG Metall negotiate wages and working conditions for the entire industry as indispensable, but wanted to "open up" it in order to give companies the opportunity to "supplement it sensibly" (Kannegiesser). The aim is to compensate for differences within the entire industry and to be able to react to “special business situations”. “Within certain bandwidths” (Kannegiesser), company management and works councils should be able to decide for themselves how they wanted to regulate, for example, “working hours and allocated pay”. The trade unions described this objective as “holes in the collective agreement” and “operationalization” and rejected it. In March 2004, Kannegiesser achieved his goal in negotiations with IG Metall: the opening of the area-wide collective bargaining agreement with company-related supplementary collective bargaining agreements with which collective bargaining standards can be deviated from (“Pforzheim Agreement”). After the first experiences with the practice of this agreement, Kannegießer spoke positively to the Süddeutsche Zeitung about the area collective agreement, which he described as a “model for the future”.

Since September 24, 2010, Kannegiesser has been the President of the Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-Based Industries , CEEMET. In 2012, Kannegiesser was replaced as President of Gesamtmetall by Rainer Dulger .

Kannegiesser is one of the main initiators and curator of the New Social Market Economy initiative financed by the employers' association Gesamtmetall .
