Martin August Johannes Möbius (born December 7, 1859 in Leipzig , † January 25, 1946 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German botanist .

Live and act

Martin Möbius is the son of the pedagogue Paul Möbius and the grandson of the mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius ; the physician Paul Julius Möbius was his older brother.

Martin Möbius was from 1891 to 1893 associate professor for botany at the University of Heidelberg . In 1893 he became a lecturer in botany and director of the Dr. Senckenberg Foundation . From 1914 to 1928 he was the first director of the Botanical Institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and also director of the Botanical Garden in Frankfurt am Main .

Martin Möbius also commented on socio-political issues. In 1914 he was one of the signatories of the declaration of university teachers of the German Empire . In 1935 he wrote a letter to the mayor of Frankfurt am Main Friedrich Krebs (NSDAP) to draw his attention to an anti-Semitic poster for which the people of Frankfurt would be ashamed in front of strangers visiting the city .
