Martin Milag

Martin Milag , also: Martinus Milagius (* March 2nd / 12th, 1598 in Triestewitz ; † July 28th, 1657 in Dessau ) was a lawyer and diplomat in the service of Princely Anhalt.

Life

Although coming from a poor background, Milag managed to enroll in the law faculty of the University of Frankfurt / Oder from 1619. As a licentiate in law, he went to relatives in Zerbst in 1623 , where he worked as a lawyer. In 1626, Prince Christian I of Anhalt-Bernburg appointed him as court clerk in Bernburg (Saale) . After Christian's death he entered the service of Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen , who transferred him to the chancellery of his Lieutenancy in Halberstadt as Princely Councilor . Milag remained in this position until 1634 and then returned to Anhalt, where he advised Princes Ludwig and August as a Princely Councilor on legal issues. He went on diplomatic broadcasts several times. From 1638 we find him at the Zerbster Hof as chancellor. At the peace negotiations in Osnabrück and Münster , he represented the Anhalt princes as plenipotentiary. Even after 1648 he remained exclusively in the service of Anhalt. On diplomatic trips and meetings he repeatedly represented the persistent interests. On July 28, 1657 he died at the age of sixty in Dessau. He was married twice and was survived by four of his sons.

He was an active member of the Fruitful Society under the name of “The Mitigator” . He published numerous legal writings in Latin as well as an extensive sacred songbook: The singing Isaiah, or the Prophet Isaiah, brought into pure German rhymes and divided into 114 chants, which are based on the well-known French melodies of the Psalms Dr. Ambrosius Lobwassers can be sung (Bremen 1646). In it u. a. four songs by Diederich von dem Werder .
