Martin Rang (born November 6, 1900 in Wolfskirch ( Posen ), † March 14, 1988 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German Protestant religious educator and educational scientist .

The son of the government councilor, temporary pastor and writer Florens Christian Rang (1864–1924) attended grammar school in Koblenz and from 1921 studied German, Romance studies, philosophy and Protestant theology in Marburg, Jena, Gießen and Paris (at the Sorbonne and the Faculté de théologie protestante ). He belonged to the Neuwerk movement in the Christian youth movement . After passing the assessor examination, he was initially a teacher until he was appointed lecturer at the Pädagogische Akademie Halle (Saale) in 1930. A year later he was appointed professor, was dismissed in 1933 for his commitment to the Confessing Church and from 1935 taught as a teacher in Wiesbaden. But he continued to publish, especially the book Biblical Lessons. Theoretical foundation and practical guide for religious instruction in schools, churches and families (revised under the title Handbook for Biblical Education 1939, etc.). During the Second World War he did military service as a reserve officer and was taken prisoner by the British. In 1946 he was appointed head of primary school teacher training in North Hesse, in 1951 professor of religious education at the Oldenburg University of Education and, as successor to Heinrich Weinstock, professor of educational science in Frankfurt (Main) in 1960 , where he taught until his retirement in 1968.

Rang emphasized that religious education is a form of “church in school”, a recuperated baptismal class that can only be given by denominational believers. It depends on the child-appropriate "address". His textbooks for religious education were widely available until the 1970s.

His pedagogical interpretation of Rousseau , which shows the connection between his anthropology and the educational program that becomes clear in the Émile or through education, was epochal. The connection to religious education is mainly in the 4th book, which includes the "Creed of a Savoyard Vicar".

Rang lived with his wife Christine in Königstein im Taunus in an avant-garde glass house designed by the architect Richard Neutra .
