Martin Ruland the Younger

Martin Ruland the Younger , also Martinus Rulandus or Martin Rulandt (born  November 11, 1569 in Lauingen , †  April 23, 1611 in Prague ), was a German doctor and alchemist . He was considered a supporter of the chemiatry founded by Paracelsus .

Life

Ruland d. J. was born as the son of the doctor Martin Ruland the Elder. Ä. (1532–1602) born. After completing school at the Lauinger Gymnasium illustrious (today Albertus-Gymnasium ) he studied medicine at the universities of Tübingen , Jena and Basel .

Ruland d. J. received his doctorate in Basel in 1592 and then went to Regensburg as a city ​​physician . Here he also treated the then Austrian Archduke Matthias through his presumed mediation Ruland the Elder. 1607 as a court physician and later personal physician of the emperor . Rudolf II came to Prague.

Ruland d. J. stood in close, z. Partly friendly exchange with well-known contemporaries such as Caspar Bauhin , Andreas Libavius and Johannes Kepler .

He died at the age of 41 from the " Hungarian fever " he described in his work De perniciosa luis Hungaricae tecmarsi et curatione .

The most important work from today's point of view is his Lexicon of Alchemy, published posthumously in 1612 . It explains the alchemical terminology and symbolism. Even today it is an important source for understanding alchemy. The lexicon used to be often wrongly given to his father Ruland d. Ä. attributed.

An English translation of Waite is available for the lexicon written in Latin . In 1987 a reprint of the original edition was published. A German translation is missing.
