Martin Schoebel

Martin Schoebel (born September 24, 1958 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German archivist and historian. He is the head of the Schwerin State Main Archive in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Life

Martin Schoebel studied history, philosophy and Romance studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and at Dijon . In 1984 he completed his studies with the first state examination for higher education . This was followed by activities as a research assistant at the German Historical Institute in Paris , the University of Münster and the University of Aachen , where he received his doctorate in 1988 . His legal traineeship for archives, which he completed from 1989 to 1991 in Koblenz and Marburg , he completed in 1991 with the second state examination.

After subsequent employment as an archivist at the state archive in Koblenz and the archive school in Marburg , he switched to the state archive in Greifswald as director in April 1994 . Between 1998 and 2006 he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Documentation Center for Victims of German Dictatorships. In addition, since 1998 he has represented the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the negotiations on the return of cultural assets relocated due to the war. In 2006 he also became deputy head of the state archive department at the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . He was responsible for the expansion of the archive system in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the creation of the archive law for the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Another focus of his work is cooperation with archives, authorities, libraries and museums in Poland .

From 2009 to 2013 he chaired the Historical Commission for Pomerania . In 2012 he took over the management of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Archives.
