Martin Skaba (born July 28, 1935 in Gleiwitz , Upper Silesia ) is a former GDR soccer player who played eight international matches for DFV from 1958 to 1963 .

career

Clubs, 1952 to 1968

19-year-old Martin Skaba came to SC Dynamo Berlin and BFC Dynamo in February 1955 via the stations BSG Motor Quedlinburg (1952–1954) and SC DHfK Leipzig (1954 – January 1955) . The defender played his first games in the East German league in the 1956 season, when SC Dynamo was relegated to the second division as 13th in the table . In 1957, Skaba actively experienced winning the championship in the GDR league and thus the immediate return to the league. The runner-up title in 1960 should be Skaba's best placement with Dynamo Berlin. Two third places in 1959 and 1962 are also among his successes in the championship. In the FDGB Cup, however, it worked in 1959 with the cup win with 3-2 goals after extra time in the replay against Wismut Aue . Martin Skaba and his teammates lost the 1962 cup final with 1: 3 goals against SC Chemie Halle . From 1956 to 1968 he played 255 league games.

Selection appointments

Martin Skaba received the first of eight appointments to the B national team for the international match against Poland on September 2, 1958. He made his debut at the side of his club colleague Werner Heine as a left defender. In the 2-0 away win, the DFV team was looked after by Richard Hofmann . Already on September 14th he made his debut in the national soccer team of the GDR at the international match in Leipzig against Romania. Here, too, Skaba took the position of left defender in the 3-2 win. Fritz Gödicke acted as trainer . On May 1, 1959, the defender of Dynamo Berlin played his second A international match against Hungary in Berlin. In the second leg of the German-German Olympic "ghost games" on September 23, 1959 in Düsseldorf, he was in the defense of the GDR team, which also lost the second game with 1: 2 goals against the German national soccer team of the DFB. With his eighth international match on October 19, 1963 in Berlin against Hungary, Martin Skaba said goodbye to the GDR national team. Karoly Soos looked after the team in their 2-1 defeat.

Skaba was the captain of the East Berlin selection, which won the DFV's challenge cup in July 1964 with a 2-1 win over the Gera district.

After the player career

The former BFC captain was employed as a coach at the club after the end of his playing career, at times also assistant to head coach Jürgen Bogs . In Mozambique he trained local coaches and after his return to Africa served as youth leader in the capital city club.
