Martin Visbeck

Martin Visbeck (born March 21, 1963 in Braunschweig ) is a German oceanographer and climate researcher .

Life

Martin Visbeck passed his Abitur in 1982 at the Soltau grammar school , then studied from 1982 to 1989 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and received his diploma in physical oceanography in 1989 . From 1989 to 1993 he completed his postgraduate studies in physical oceanography at the Institute for Oceanography (IfM) in Kiel .

From 1994 to 1995, after completing his doctorate, he spent some time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA . From 1995 to 2004 he was at Columbia University in New York , USA, a. a. employed as a professor and received the so-called "Storke-Doherty Lectureship" at the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Between 1998 and 1999 he was a visiting scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Hobart , Australia . Since 2004 he has been professor for physical oceanography at today's GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel . In 2007 he was elected spokesman for the Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean " and still holds this position. Between 2007 and 2011 he was Deputy Director of the Leibniz Institute for Marine Sciences in Kiel.

Martin Visbeck's research focus is on ocean and climate variability with a strong focus on the circulation of the subpolar North Atlantic and the subtropical oxygen minimum zones . For data acquisition and further development of the observation possibilities of oceanic circulation, Visbeck relies on expeditions of research ships and increasingly also on the possibilities of modern robotics platforms, such as underwater gliders. Visbeck is involved in the development of long-term observatories of the oceanic water column . The aim is, among other things, to better understand the large-scale ocean circulation of all depth areas, physical processes of the ocean, their effects on currents, deep water formation and the oceanic transport of heat and fresh water as well as their interactions with biological and chemical processes.
