Martin Zeitz

Martin Zeitz (born January 4, 1950 in Driedorf ; † November 26, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German doctor.

Martin Zeitz first studied mathematics and physics at the University of Marburg and from 1969 to 1975 medicine at the Free University of Berlin (FU). He completed his specialist training at the Steglitz Clinic. In 1977 he obtained his license to practice medicine and received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with the thesis collagen degradation in relation to collagen synthesis in scarring of the skin . From 1977 to 1979 Zeitz was a research assistant at the Institute for Pharmacology at the Free University of Berlin. Zeitz was a visiting scientist in the USA for several years. His habilitation took place in 1989 at the Free University of Berlin. In 1993 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin. Zeitz has been a university professor and head of the Clinic for Internal Medicine (focus on gastroenterology / hepatology ) at the Saarland University Hospital in Homburg since 1994 . In 2001 he moved to the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital of the Free University of Berlin. From 2006 to September 2012 he was Medical Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal, Kidney and Metabolic Medicine at the Charité . For many years Zeitz was the spokesman for the Medical Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and in 2008 President of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases eV Since October 2012, he has succeeded Jörg F. Debatin as the medical director and chairman of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . During his tenure, he opened the University Centers for Rare Diseases, Transplant Medicine, and Neonatal Medicine. They are designed to improve care for patients with rare diseases. In 2013 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

His main focus was the care of patients with liver diseases and gastrointestinal diseases. Zeitz died after a short, serious illness in November 2013 at the age of 63. He leaves behind his wife and two children. He is buried in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf .
