Martinus Balticus (* around 1532 in Munich ; † 1601 in Ulm ) was a teacher , playwright and poet .

Life

Coming from a poor background, Balticus received lessons in Latin and Greek from Pastor Zacharias Weichsner in Bruck . For six years he went to Joachimsthal , where Johannes Mathesius continued to teach him and prepared him for studies in Wittenberg , where Philipp Melanchthon influenced him.

He returned to Munich from his studies in 1553 and took over his position at the Latin school as Hieronymus Ziegler's successor . Since he took the Protestant standpoint, he could no longer stay in his hometown and in 1559 switched to the Latin school in Ulm. In Ulm he actively campaigned for the further development of schools.

Balticus wrote poems in Latin at an early stage. His poems, which he himself translated into German, are full of thought and are gripping in their popularity. Encouraged by Melanchthon, who is considered the inventor of school dramas, he worked intensively on their elaboration in the religious style.
