Mascha and the Bear ( Russian Маша и Медведь Mascha i Medwed ) is a Russian computer animation series and is considered the most successful animation series of the Internet age with a placement in the top 10 most viewed YouTube videos as the only non-music video and a TV broadcast in over 100 countries.

It is about the adventures of the small, sweet, kind-hearted as well as a bit clumsy and sometimes annoying girl Mascha and the harmony-loving, but quite irritable bear, who used to be a circus bear. The series was created by Andrei Dobrunow , Oleg Kusowkow and Dmitri Loweiko . The idea is based on a well-known Russian folk tale and is inspired by an experience of Oleg Kusowkow when he observed the young daughter of friends on vacation in 1996.

The series first aired on Rossiya 1 . The German first broadcast took place in a synchronized version on November 18, 2013 on KiKA . In Switzerland, the show as Mascha und dä Bär was shown for the first time in September 2013 in a Swiss-German dubbed version.

All Russian episodes are freely available on YouTube in HD quality. There are also episodes in the English language version.

On September 2, 2015, the 52nd episode was published on YouTube, completing the second season. After some media reports about the end of the series due to lack of funds - in the last episode of the season Mascha leaves the forest and goes into town - the producers announced that they are already working on the 3rd season with 26 new episodes . The cost of approximately $ 250,000 per episode will be financed by the production company itself and production will continue through mid-2017. The first episode of season 3 was released on November 28, 2015 on YouTube.

Since 2015 Egmont Ehapa Verlag has had a German children's magazine “Mascha und der Bär”.

In 2015, the series won the Kidscreen Awards 2015 for Best Animation .

Masha

The protagonist of the series is Mascha, a little girl. She wears fuchsia-colored traditional Russian clothes, has blonde hair and big green eyes. She's playful, has a sweet tooth, and is always out to have fun. In the series she is (apart from a few guest roles) the only character who speaks and the only person. In the original Mascha was spoken by Alina Kukuschkina in the first two seasons, she was eight years old at the beginning of the series. Varvara Sarantseva has spoken of Masha since the third season.

The bear

The second leading actor is the bear Mischa. He used to be a circus bear and actually wanted to enjoy his retirement. Although he cannot speak, he certainly understands human language, can read and makes himself understandable with gestures. In the series, he takes on the role of parents for little Mascha. In the original Misha is "spoken" by Boris Kutnewitsch.

Other characters in the series

  • The she-bear is the target of Mischa's romantic advances. She is not uninterested in Mischa, but repeatedly lets him down. The she-bear is a little arrogant and aloof and does not get along well with Mischa's down-to-earth manner.
  • The collar bear with black fur and V-shaped markings is Mischa's rival with the she-bear. He's a muscleman and macho. Although the exact opposite of Misha, he cannot end up with the she-bear permanently either. Neither Mascha nor the other forest animals can suffer him, although Mascha clearly shows this and messes with him while the animals avoid him or, especially the wolves, cuddle in front of him.
  • The two wolves live in a UAZ-452 ambulance that is not ready to drive on a hill. They are constantly hungry and mainly feed on insects. Every now and then they try to eat other forest animals or Masha and also to steal the always full refrigerator from the bear. They suffer most from Mascha's antics, mostly because their ambulance rolls down the hill as a result; a running gag of the series.
  • The rabbit is a good friend of Misha, and he often plays ice hockey or other games with him. Sometimes he works in the bear's garden, but mostly he just steals the carrots. He also likes to make fun of Misha's past as a circus performer.
  • The squirrels always throw cones at Masha when they are annoyed.
  • The hedgehogs are largely immune to Masha's antics. They collect items by impaling them on their spines.
  • Mascha's farm animals (chickens, goats, dogs and pigs) flee as soon as they see Mascha. Only the pig is often too slow and has to atone for Mascha's antics and let himself be pushed around in a stroller like a baby. The goat, dog and pig are talented musicians, and the pig is also a good dancer.
  • The bees that Misha keeps in beehives in his garden are extremely aggressive and don't let Mascha get away with any antics.
  • Dasha, Mascha's cousin, looks very similar to Mascha, but has blue eyes, silver-blonde hair and wears glasses. In addition, she is quieter and more distinguished than Mascha in terms of appearance and lives in a big city.
  • Panda, a distant cousin of Misha, lives in China and sometimes comes on short visits, as Misha’s house is conveniently right next to the Moscow - Beijing railway line .
  • Tiger, a former colleague of Misha from the circus, sometimes comes for a short visit. Then he and Mischa reminisce about old times or play chess .
  • Penguin is a foundling that Mischa hatched as an egg and then raised like her own child. He now lives in Antarctica and sometimes comes to visit in winter.
  • Father Frost , an old man barely taller than Mascha, distributes the gifts to the forest dwellers for the New Year. Most of the time, he travels on a railroad trolley on the surrounding area.

Both the German and the Swiss-German version of the first season are from Berliner Synchron AG . Rainer Gerlach wrote the dialogue book for the German version . The German voice actors are Amelie Dörr , Max Gertsch , Beate Gerlach , Jürgen Kluckert and Eva Thärichen . Gabriela Kasperski wrote the text for the Swiss version and Marek Beles directed, voice actors were Lana Finn Marti , Martin Gelzer , Georg Scharegg and Max Gertsch.

Season 2 was also dubbed by Berliner Synchron, while Marieke Oeffinger took care of the script and the dialogue . The synchronization of season 3 comes from Lavendelfilm GmbH from Potsdam, dialogue book for this by Nadine Geist , dialogue direction by Sebastian Schulz .
