Mask of Murder 2 (lookalike) ( Doppelganger , alternatively: Doppelganger: The Evil Within , and the moment of death ) is an American thriller by Avi Nesher from the year 1993 .

The mother of Holly Gooding, who lives in New York City , is murdered, Holly is suspected by the police. She moves to Los Angeles , where she sublet with the writer Patrick Highsmith.
Gooding is plagued by nightmares, in some of which she sees an eerie figure in the mirror. She is convinced that her doppelganger will pursue her. She asks Highsmith to drive her to her family's old house, which is abandoned. When Highsmith notices a female figure in one of the windows, Gooding wants to return immediately. She and Highsmith sleep together, but the next day Gooding says she can't remember anything.
An alleged FBI agent who stays in one of the apartments in the house warns Highsmith of a closer relationship with Gooding. Highsmith and Gooding visit the woman's younger brother, who is in a hospital and has not said a word for years. The following night, a woman who looks like Holly wants to visit the boy. After being turned away, she sneaks into his room and stabs him with a knife.
Gooding is arrested but later released. Doctor Heller, a New York psychiatrist who used to treat Gooding, warns Highsmith about the woman.
It turns out that Doctor Heller played different people, including Gooding's doppelganger. During the showdown in the family's abandoned house, he admitted to Highsmith that he wanted Gooding to go to prison and that after her release, he would belong to the doctor alone.
Gooding, lying unconscious on a sofa, splits into two scary-looking figures. Doctor Heller kills one of them, then reunites with the twin figure. The arriving police find Gooding in their own body; she is taken to a hospital where she wakes up.

The lexicon of international film described the film as a " witty ", " brightly colored grotesque " that alludes to " unmistakable role models " and has a " surreal punchline ".
