Massimiliano Salini (born March 11, 1973 in Soresina , Province of Cremona ) is an Italian politician ( PdL , NCD , Forza Italia ). He was President of the Province of Cremona from 2009 to 2014. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014 .

Life

Salini studied law at the University of Milan and graduated with a thesis in constitutional law. As a student representative, he was a member of the academic senate and chaired the student council of all universities in Lombardy. From 1998 to 2000 he worked on the staff of the Regional President of Lombardy, Roberto Formigoni . He then worked in the private sector: as a project manager at a conveyor belt manufacturer, as deputy chairman of the board of a multi-utility service provider in Crema and as a member of the board of directors at Linea Group Holding (a subsidiary of A2A ) in the same sector.

In June 2009 the then non-party Salini was elected president of the province of Cremona with 51.0% as a candidate for the center-right alliance of Silvio Berlusconi's Il Popolo della Libertà (PdL) and Lega Nord . He held the office until July 2014.

For the 2014 European elections , he entered the constituency of Northwest Italy on the list of Nuovo Centrodestra (NCD; a spin-off from the PdL) and Unione di Centro . With almost 27,000 preferential votes, he initially missed entry into the European Parliament , but moved up for the top candidate Maurizio Lupi , who renounced his mandate. Salini joined the Group of the European People's Party (EPP). In September 2015 he returned to Berlusconi's Forza Italia party (successor to the PdL), but that did not change his membership in the EPP group. He was a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (2014–19) and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (2017–19) and was a delegate for relations with India (2014–19). In 2016/17 he was also a member of the committee of inquiry into emission measurements in the automotive industry and in 2018/19 of the special committee on financial crime, tax evasion and tax avoidance.

In the 2019 European elections , he was re-elected as runner-up (behind Berlusconi) on the Forza Italia list. Since then he has been a member of the Committee on International Trade and Deputy Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Iran.
