The Massachusetts Port Authority ( Massport for short ) is an authority of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States . It owns and operates Logan International Airport , Hanscom Field and Worcester Regional Airport as well as various terminals in the Port of Boston . The agency is self-financing with its current income, which amounts to several billion US dollars per year , so that no tax money has to be spent on its operations. The headquarters of the Mass Port is located in Logan Office Center next to the Logan Airport in Boston district of East Boston . The agency is independent, but its board of directors is chaired by the incumbent Secretary of Transportation , who heads the Massachusetts Department of Transportation .

Airports

The authority owns the airports Logan International Airport , Hanscom Field and, since June 22, 2010, the Worcester Regional Airport , which has been approved by the City of Worcester for a payment of more than 15 million US dollars as part of a new law was transferred to the Massport .

Means of transport

Massport Shuttle

The Massport shuttle - bus connects all terminals at Logan International Airport with the MBTA -Station Airport the Blue Line , as well as with the water taxi on Harborside Drive .

Logan Express

The Park and Ride car parks in Braintree , Framingham , Woburn and Peabody can be reached from all terminals with the Logan Express bus .

Silver Line

The Massport supports the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority financially in the operation of the Silver Line shuttle buses that connect the city center with the terminals of Logan Airport. The Massport also offers support with the maintenance of the Airport Station and the ventilation of the Ted Williams Tunnel .

Due to state law in Massachusetts, city police, such as the Boston Police Department, have no authority over the Massport grounds . Instead, police protection is provided by the Massachusetts State Police and the Massport Police .

history

The authority was founded in 1956 and replaced the Port Commission , which had been used for these tasks until then . In 1966 the Castle Island Container Terminal was built for the Sea-Land Corporation , which was one of the first container terminals . In 1971, the Massport had a second container terminal built in Charlestown in order to enable other companies to handle containers. In 1980 the Castle Island Container Terminal was expanded and opened to other companies.

On January 1, 2010, ownership and jurisdiction of the Tobin Bridge was transferred from Massport to the newly created Massachusetts Department of Transportation .
