Mate Sarlija

Mate Šarlija (born March 15, 1929 in Zvekovica , Konavle as Nijaz Batlak ; † January 31, 1999 in Zagreb ), called Daidža ( uncle ), was a major general ( General Bojnik ) of the Croatian armed forces in retirement. At the beginning of the Croatian War (1991-1995), Šarlija was the founder and commander of I. Dobrovoljačka pukovnija "Kralj Tomislav" (I. Volunteer Regiment " Kralj Tomislav ") of the Croatian army. The unit then belonged to the Bosnian War (1992-1995) under the name 1. Bosansko-hercegovački korpus-zbor "Kralj Tomislav" (1st Bosnian-Herzegovinian Corps "Kralj Tomislav") formally to the Bosnian army .

Šarlija described himself as a Croat of Muslim denomination and, according to his own account, was a member of the fascist Ustaška mladež in the Independent State of Croatia during the Second World War .

At the beginning of the Croatian War, he came in 1991 from more than 30 years of exile in the United States to the newly independent Croatia .

He later worked as an international relations consultant at the Croatian Embassy in Sarajevo .

In a state act on February 4, 1999, Šarlija was buried with military honors in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb .
