The I. Dobrovoljačka pukovnija "Kralj Tomislav" (I. Volunteer Regiment " Kralj Tomislav ") was a unit of the Croatian Army (HV) . At the beginning of the Croatian War in December 1991, it was set up mainly by Croatian and Bosniak volunteers from Bosnia and Herzegovina . Their commander was Mate Šarlija (1929–1999). The unit was mainly used in the fight against the Yugoslav People's Army and Serbian irregulars in southern Dalmatia and the neighboring Herzegovina . At the beginning of the Bosnian War at the end of May 1992 it was affiliated with the territorial defense of the Bosnian Army (ARBiH) and renamed the 1st Bosansko-hercegovački korpus-zbor "Kralj Tomislav" (1st Bosnian-Herzegovinian Corps "Kralj Tomislav"). The unit was formally set up in Opuzen at the beginning of the Croatian War in January 1992 . For high-ranking members of the unit, an earlier entry into the unit is indicated. Their command post was in the building of the Dragljane Elementary School near Vrgorac . The commander was Mate Šarlija (1929–1999), his deputy Božan Šimović (1959–1992).

The members of the unit were also recruited from many Croatian volunteers from neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina , especially from Stolac , Čapljina , Ljubuški and Široki Brijeg . These volunteers had previously mainly participated in fighting in the southern Croatian theater of war in Dalmatia . So in the battles for Konavle , Osojnik , Čepikuće and the siege of Dubrovnik . In the battle for Čepikuće near Dubrovnik on October 1, 1991, 45 volunteers defended the strategically important place against over 400 soldiers of the Yugoslav People's Army and the Montenegrin Territorial Defense . Two Croatian volunteers were injured, seven Yugoslav soldiers were killed and over 80 injured.

After formation and basic training , the unit took part in the adjacent Herzegovina in the defense of Kruševo near Mostar against Serbian and Yugoslav units.

On 24 April 1992, the unit took with minimal losses , the barracks of the Yugoslav People's Army in Čapljina one (Herzegovina). Large amounts of military equipment, weapons and two tanks were captured.

After further fighting in the area around Mostar, the unit returned to its command post in Dragljane in Croatia .
