Matej Ašanin

Matej Ašanin (born September 4, 1993 in Zagreb , Croatia ) is a Croatian handball player .

Career

The 2.03 m tall and 118 kg heavy handball goalkeeper played in his hometown for the Croatian series champion RK Zagreb . In the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons he was loaned to the league rivals RK Split and RK Varteks Varaždin . In 2012 he went to the Spanish league ASOBAL to Ademar León , with whom he reached the round of 16 in the EHF Champions League 2012/13 and the group stage in the EHF Europa Pokal 2013/14 . For the 2014/15 season he moved to the German Bundesliga club HBW Balingen-Weilstetten . His contract ended after the 2015/16 season. He has been playing for the Portuguese first division club Sporting Lisbon since the 2016/17 season . With Sporting he won the EHF Challenge Cup in 2017 and the Portuguese championship in 2017 and 2018. In February 2019 he moved to the German Bundesliga club TSG Friesenheim . In the summer of 2019 he returned to the RK Zagreb.

With the Croatian junior national team, he finished fourth at the U-21 handball world championship in 2013 . At the U-19 World Cup in 2011, he finished eighth. Ašanin is now a member of the Croatian national team . He will take part in the 2020 European Championship with Croatia .
