Mathias Wedel (born August 10, 1953 in Erfurt ) is a journalist and writer . Since 2009 he has been editor-in-chief of Eulenspiegel . Wedel was an unofficial employee of the GDR State Security .

Life

Wedel received his doctorate in 1986 with the dissertation “On the functions of satire in socialism” at the Institute for Marxist-Leninist Culture and Art Studies at the Academy for Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the SED . Wedel worked as a lecturer at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and worked as chairman of the cabaret advisory group on the federal board of the FDGB . In addition to texts for numerous amateur cabarets , Wedel also wrote for the Potsdam “Cabaret at the Obelisk”, of which he became director for several years in the late 1980s.

Various satirical books appeared after the fall of the Wall. In addition to books, he has published in Neues Deutschland , Junge Welt , taz and Konkret . In 1994, the text Einheitsfrust , in which Wedel coined the term “OM” (“East German fellow traveler”), attracted greater media attention . Shortly afterwards, the Super-Illu magazine reported on Wedel's many years of activity as an unofficial employee of the MfS (code name “Milan”, XVIII / 1440/73). This admitted a cooperation and claimed to have been monitored by the state security and that his so-called "victim file" existed.

Wedel was part of the ensemble of the Berlin cabaret "Charly M." (formerly "Kartoon").

Wedel also writes under the pseudonyms Matti Friedrich and Atze Svoboda.
